The challenges these women face include: raising children, caring for ill and aging parents, dealing with the illness of their spouse or their own illness. I heard a very famous reporter say that she is retiring and first needs a break just to get away and think. She has been reporting news for thirty years, and says she now wants to do something that she really wants to do.
Hobbies
Golfing, fishing, bowling, cards; scrap booking, needlepoint and Internet games are popular with women. While you are looking for a new job/career, you should consider taking up a sport or activity that you have always wanted to do or try. Getting involved in a hobby will help keep your stress level down and help you relax.
Retirees. Many women are retiring early these days because of buyouts, unforeseen circumstances and planned retirements. Adjusting to retirement is challenging, especially if you have no plan of your own. Retirement should be an exciting time of a woman’s life to discover new things and opportunities. The reality is, retired women are faced with everyday struggles like everyone else. One of the most important things a retired woman/mom can do is, care more for her self.

Consulting. Companies look for professionals with expertise in a particular area and hire them on a contractual basis over a period of time. Many small companies need IT Consultants.
Teach – Adjunct Faculty. Teach an online course at a Community College. You will most likely need a Masters do become Adjunct Faculty. Also check with your Continued Education Courses in your community.
Medical Billing. This business seems to be much needed. Small doctor offices that do not have a large staff need someone to do the billing. Offer this service and contract your services.
Travel Business. Everyone travels at one time or another. Whether for business or pleasure, everyone gets on a plane, train, bus, boat or in a car at some point in time. People are looking for inexpensive accommodations that they can enjoy. If you are good with planning travel for hotel, room and board, car rentals and airline flights, you may find this a rewarding experience.
Selling Vintage items or Jewelry. You can sell your vintage or hand made jewelry on Etsy. Etsy is free to join and you will get your own url. Check it out.
Write Your Own Ebook. An Ebook is a business, so you will need to have a website to promote your book. Write something useful that people need to know and learn. Write an instructional manual or guide. Knowledge is highly sought after today. Research your topic before writing the ebook.
Write. Share Your Knowledge. Be a Web Content Writer or Blogger. Join Examiner and earn money for writing articles and for traffic views. If you already have a Facebook, Twitter or LinkedIn page, you can link your articles to the social media sites.

I think these suggestions are great. I'm not 40 and over yet, but that's pretty much where my mind is a lot of the time. I have some friends in this age group who are just starting new careers and new marriages at this point. It seems like anything you start after 40 is going to have a fresh look coupled with some actual experience and wisdom. Great hub!
Dolores, working solo takes a lot of work, tenacity, persistence, patience, etc....to see results we hope for. I think the most important thing about earning and income is to do what you really enjoy.
There is fulfillment in money, but even moreso in Effectiveness!

Being way over 40, I am contemplating how to mix a hobby with a part time job. My problem is that I keep coming up with ideas that will earn very little - artist...Tarot reader...writing online.

Yes, izettl, women are very talented. I think we must trust ourselves more, and create a business around the talents we are good at. Too often we take on jobs that are not suited for us.

I'm not 40 yet, but all of these suggestions are just as ueful. When I worked in the business industry, I was shocked how many women were so talented at their hobbies or something besides their actualy job so that's proof many women are capable of doing the things you've suggested and being very profitable. Great hub! I am not over 40, but I am glad I work at home. I have set the stage for a schedule I can work with and business I can grow as my children do. I have the ability to outsource to employees when I want to work less. I love this option as my life changes throughout my life.
